Extinction Chess
Chess variant
Chess variant where that player loses, who does not have at least one piece of each type. In other words, a player loses if any of the following happens with his/her pieces:
- the king is captured,
- the queen is captured,
- both rooks are captured,
- both bishops are captured,
- both knights are captured,
- all pawns are captured,
- or the last pawn is promoted (except when it, at the same time, captures the opponents last piece of a particular type).
Otherwise the rules of chess apply, with the following differences:
- There is no check or checkmate, the king is only subject to the rules described above.
- Pawns can also promote to king (and if there are multiple kings, one can be let captured without losing the game).
Note: if that rare condition occurs when the player on turn has pieces of each type but no legal moves, the game ends in a draw (stalemate).
